Liverpool Victoria (more commonly known as LV) is one the biggest insurance companies in the UK. Founded in 1843, they originally offered penny policies which were a way of saving for people who had little means. Today, they have over 5 million customers in the UK, and employ a workforce of more than 5,700 people.
LV offers its services directly to its customers, as well as through independent financial advisors and insurance brokers. Their main products include general insurance, life assurance, investments and banking.
It’s general insurance that LV are the best known for in the UK. Their general insurance products include insurance cover for motors, homes, pets, travel and small business. LV are the UK’s third biggest car insurer, insuring more than 11% of cars across the country. In 2012 they received the award for being the ‘General Insurer of the Year’ at the British Insurance Awards.
Liverpool Victoria were well known for their investment services. In 2011 they had a staggering £8 billion in funds under management, however they decided that they were unable to achieve sufficient scale so transferred their funds to a different asset management company.
Until 2007, LV used to provide loans and credit cards to the UK public. This was until they closed this part of the business due to suffering heavy losses. The following year, they were fined £840,000 by the Financial Standards Authority in connection with the well-known Payment Protection Insurance scandal, for selling PPI alongside their loans up until 2007.
As well as general insurance for consumers, LV also offer a range of life assurance products. These cover with-profits assurance, term assurance, whole life insurance, annuities and equity release mortgages.
In 2015 LV was ranked as the best insurance business in the UK for customer satisfaction. They managed to rank 7th out of all business in the UK. Apart from LV, only one other insurance company made it to the top 50.
