Frank Hughes who was trained as an electrical engineer after having served in the Great War established Hughes in 1921. He built and sold radios in the shop of Lowestoft, Suffolk where his family literally lived for many years. In 1946, the business was incorporated but Frank passed away the following year, leaving his children Peter, Phyllis and Jim to take over the management of the company. Today, almost one hundred years on, Hughes remains a true family business with the third generation under Robert and Jeremy Hughes.
Hughes was fast to adapt and introduce new technologies as they developed, such as televisions and labor-saving kitchen appliances. Known for their good engineering background, people rely on them for appliances purchases and repairs. The business went well and expanded to over 30 shops and 5 service centers located throughout East Anglia.
The new millennium bought new opportunities and Hughes expanded its retail and acquired Apollo 2000 based in the West Midlands and Bennetts. These businesses operated from large out of town stores which impressively improved Hughes expertise in the sale of kitchen appliances and IT equipment. Hughes has grown its service capabilities both in online market and on its East Anglia’s large infrastructure dedicated to the repair of home electrical and kitchen appliances.
Hughes has five dedicated service centers, based in Norwich, Lowestoft, Ipswich, Kings Lynn and Thetford. They employ more than 200 staff across the service centers; each service center has a team of mobile engineers whose aim is to fix electrical problems in your home. Each service centers also has a dedicated and professional delivery team, ready to deliver and install any of the wide range of products that they sell or rent.
